Masturbation Month was started in 1995 by the Good Vibrations sex toy shop in response to the firing of U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders for her remarks on masturbation at a 1994 United Nations conference on AIDS. Regarding masturbation as a sexual outlet for young people to help avoid riskier behaviors, she said, “I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught.”
